Book of Numbers Summary

Deuteronomy is a restatement of the law that God had given 40 years previously on Mt. Sinai. Israel has wandered 40 years in the wilderness. The generation that came out of Egypt has died, except for Moses, Caleb, and Joshua. Moses dies in the last chapter, leaving Joshua to succeed him. The book stresses the importance of obeying God.

Title

It is called Deuteronomy, meaning “second law.”

In Hebrew, the book of Deuteronomy is named eileh haddebarim, “These [are] the words,” sometimes simply abbreviated as debarim, “words.”

Author and Date of Writing

The agreed upon author was Moses and it is assumed he wrote Numbers and the rest of the Pentateuch after Israel's exodus between 1446 to c. 1406 B.C.
The date of writing was 1406 BC, following the exodus and forty years of wilderness wanderings, and the place of composition was the plains of Moab.
