A GUIDE FOR NEW CHRISTIANS

Righteousness: What It Means for a New Christian

Being right with God. A free gift, not a prize to earn.

In one sentence:

righteousness is God’s gift of a right standing with him through Jesus, and a life that grows to reflect it.

The short version

In the Bible, righteousness means being right with God: living in a way that matches who God is and what he asks of us.

The surprising good news of Christianity is that you don’t earn it by being perfect. God gives it to you as a gift through Jesus.

THREE WAYS THE BIBLE USES THE WORD

1. God is righteous

Righteousness starts with God’s own character. He is perfectly good, fair, and faithful. He never lies, never plays favorites, and always keeps his promises. When the Bible calls God “righteous,” it is saying he is the standard of what is right .

Psalm 145:17 –  The Lord is righteous in all His ways, Gracious in all His works.

2. God gives righteousness to us

This is the heart of the Christian message. Every person falls short of God’s standard (Romans 3:23), and no amount of good behavior can fully close that gap. So God did something about it: Jesus lived the perfect life we couldn’t, and he took the penalty for our wrongs on the cross. When you trust in Jesus, God treats you as righteous because of what Christ did, not because of what you did (Romans 3:22; 2 Corinthians 5:21).

Theologians call this being justified, which simply means declared “not guilty” and accepted by God.

  • Romans 3:23 -for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
  • Romans 3:21-22 – 21 But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, 22 even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe.
  • 2 Corinthians 5:21 – For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
An everyday picture: Imagine you owe a huge debt you could never repay. Someone steps in, pays it in full, and then puts their spotless record in your name. You didn’t earn it. You received it.

3. Righteousness shows up in how we live

Because God has made you right with him, your life slowly begins to change. Living righteously is not a way of earning God’s love. It is a response to the love you’ve already been given. It looks like:

This growth is gradual. The Holy Spirit works in you over time, and you will still stumble. That’s normal, and it doesn’t undo what God has already given you.

Common misunderstandings

“Righteous means perfect.”

Not in your own strength. Your standing with God rests on Jesus’ perfection, not yours.

“Righteous means self-righteous.”

The opposite. Someone who understands the gift is humble, because they know they didn’t earn it.

“I have to be good enough first.”

The Bible teaches that God makes you right with him first, and the change in your behavior follows.

Putting it into practice

  1. Rest in the gift. When you fail, remember that your standing with God doesn’t rise and fall with your performance.
  2. Keep growing. Read the Bible, pray, and be part of a church community that helps you follow Jesus.
  3. Respond with gratitude. Let your choices flow from thankfulness, not fear or guilt.

Verses to start with

21 But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, 22 even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all [f]and on all who believe. For there is no difference; 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 being justified [g]freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,

For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith;

Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous.

In one sentence: righteousness is God’s gift of a right standing with him through Jesus, and a life that grows to reflect it.
